Our study is conducted in partnership with local schools. Therefore, it is vital that schools derive some benefits from participation, including those which help to increase opportunities for higher education and improve mental health awareness. We also hope that participation in the study itself will help to raise awareness of mental health amongst students, teachers, and parents.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MATERIAL & ASSEMBLIES
We can provide schools with a series of mental health awareness workshops to be delivered by teachers (e.g., within PSHE lessons). We can share PowerPoint slides and detailed lesson plans for individual sessions (20 minutes) on anxiety, depression, self-harm, body image, nutrition, boundaries and empowerment, challenging stigma, and managing exam stress. We can also deliver 20-30 minute assemblies on mental health awareness.
RESEARCH METHODS WORKSHOP (RISE)
We can deliver 15-30 minute assemblies on managing exam stress and anxiety. We can also deliver small group, interactive workshops on managing exam stress.
We can provide an engaging day-long campus visit to the Denmark Hill site, which is especially relevant for high-achieving science students and those interested in health and medicine careers (maximum group size of 10 students per visit). Students get to see behind the scenes at KCL via tours of the genetics lab, brain bank, and neuroimaging suite. Teachers can also opt for students to also receive a university-level taster lecture in genetics and mental health, and learn more about the day-to-day life of a health researcher.
Depending on the time of year and availability of KCL students, we can facilitate the provision of placement students (from relevant MSc courses at KCL) to work with school counselling teams and other support services. Duties may include (but not limited to) in-class support, assisting speech and language therapists and educational psychologists, and facilitating group work.
